My Dark Vanessa is a book about a woman who was the victim of grooming by her high school teacher. Fifteen years later her life is turned upside down when women start coming out with their stories of sexual assault at the hands of this teacher. The thing is, she did not view their relationship as assault or grooming. Now she's starting to question how she remembers things and the actions of the man she once loved. This book broke me. It was beautifully written and you start to get into the mind of a 15-year-old who is in love with her teacher. Then, before you can start making excuses the author thrust you back into the present and shows you the consequences of this grooming and how he ruined her life. It was so difficult to read from the perspective of a victim of grooming and see how that experience shaped her. I wanted so badly to jump into the book and save her. Seeing how everyone in her life failed her…. Please don’t read this book until you are in a healthy mindset.
