Beevor lays out a powerful narrative of the Spanish Civil War in Spain.  As someone who was totally unfamiliar with the topic, this was a very good entry point.  Not convinced by some of his conclusions, but the narrative is the focus of the work and is definitely a strong point. I was most interested in the relationship between the Church and Franco, and this book was provided me with the introduction I was looking for
