Moon Rising by Tui T. Sutherland

5.0

Another fantastic piece by Tui.

We're back with our wonderful Dragonets of Destiny, only this time we're focusing on their new project to inspire genuine and long-lasting peace. Tsunami, Clay, Starflight, and Sunny are running a school (alas, Glory is only able to consult as she has a kingdom to run), and the point of view characters of this next arc are a winglet of dragons from various tribes assigned to live and work together to help them better understand other dragon cultures.

Tui excels with world and character building, and this book is no exception. Moonwatcher is a delightful character, not really accepted by her tribe, anxious about her secrets, but desperate to find her place. We get to see characters with anxiety (and their coping mechanisms), characters who have been thrust into roles they were far to young to have to assume, and characters who struggle to find the right path. Not everyone is immediately likable, but that's okay.

There are some intriguing surprises and some really nice friendships.

I'm trying to catch up to my kids on these, and they are so engaging it's easy to just keep reading!

My recommendation for reading order of the Wings of Fire (WoF) series:
WoF #1-5
WoF Legends - Darkstalker
WoF #6-14
WoF Legends - Dragonslayer (this could be read after book #5, but that would spoil a sweet surprise present in book #14)

The WoF books follow a five book plot arc (with each book covering the growth arc of one character). If book 1 doesn't work for you, consider starting with book 6 or 11 to get invested in the world. Each book adds to the complexity of culture and history in the world, so you may miss a little if you skip books, but the overall plot and story will work.
