The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein

adventurous challenging informative tense medium-paced

5.0

A thoroughly damning and damn thorough book that explains the medical history and political/social/economic contexts of disaster capitalism. It covers so much and does it all with clarity, whether it's detailing how the economic/political/military shock therapy was imposed upon Argentina, Iraq, Chile, Russia or Sri Lanka, or detailing which industries (and countries) exactly profit from the modern warfare/homeland security/surveillance/oil industries. For all of its descriptions of essentially the cruellest and most vindictive systems which underpin the global world economy and order post 9/11, it does offer hope and alternatives throughout the book and in the conclusion especially, which I was very grateful for. This was my first Klein book, but it definitely won't be my last. Essential reading for understanding the social, economic, and political worlds we inhabit atm.

P.S, wow, the US empire really is one of the most evil things human beings have ever created and sustained.
