4.5
Overall: 4.5 rounded to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Readability: 📖📖📖📖
Feels: 🦋🦋🦋🦋
Emotional Depth: 💔💔💔💔
Sexual Tension: ⚡⚡⚡
Romance: 💞💞💞💞
Sensuality: 💋💋💋 (She is a bit on the poetic side over explicit)
Sex Scene Length: 🍑🍑🍑
Steam Scale (Number of Sex Scenes): 🔥🔥🔥
Humor: A touch
Perspective: Third person from both the hero and heroine
More character focused or plot focused? a pretty balanced mix but maybe a bit more character focused
When mains are first on page together: Pretty soon in, chapter 2 or 11% (It’s a novella so it’s not too many pages in)
Cliffhanger: No, but the ending is a bit of a doozy regarding other characters (Cris, who will be getting a book in the future)
Epilogue: No
Format: read e-book version through kindle unlimited
Should I read in order?
This one is probably better after reading The Taste of Light, since it’s almost like an extended epilogue for that couple. And Pedro is a bit of a villain in the first book, The True Purpose of Vines, so reading the series in order would be delightful! Plus the mains from books 1 and 3 are side characters here. I think if I read this without the background, I wouldn’t get the same angst out of their relationship concerns.
Basic plot:
Anne tries to convince Pedro that a family is all she wants for Christmas
Give this a try if you want:
- 1874 time period
- Portugal setting in the countryside
- holiday house party
- age gap – the hero is 13 or so years older
- opposites attract – grump/sunshine vibes
- curse (a folktale about the bridge and a deal made)
- morally gray hero
- wanting a baby is a big plot point
- children in the story
- novella length
- higher steam – 3 scenes within a shorter page count – Siniscalchi’s scenes are fairly explicit on the foreplay, but penetration is very short and the scenes themselves are not overly long.
Ages:
- Heroine is 20 and hero is around 33
First line:
Pedro lifted his head from his correspondence as sunlight flooded the study, casting a warm glow on the Gobelin carpet.
My thoughts:
I find Siniscalchi’s writing so, so romantic. There is just something about her prose that is so beautiful. This novella ended up grabbing my heart and bringing back all my angsty, swoony thoughts about Pedro and Anne.
I do think this is better in order – being a novella, I think I wouldn’t care much about these mains without having read their story. But having read their story, I cared so much! I was drawn back into Pedro’s need to repress his darkness and see how maybe he’s protecting Anne a bit too much. Their relationship is so sweet and so special. I just love them.
Something I really adore are legends and folktales, maybe a touch of paranormal or magic – so I absolutely loved the addition of the mysterious murmuring river and the bridge here.
Content warnings: These should be taken as a minimum of what to expect. It’s very possible I have missed some.
- mention of death and slaving
- parental death and grief mixed within a toxic family relationship
- missing children
Locations of kisses/intimate scenes:
Safe sex: Hero withdraws for most scenes – safe sex/pregnancy is a main plot point of this story
12% - 🔥 kisses, oral for her, he gags and binds her wrists and does her from behind. Followed by another short scene
Her delicate jaw moved, adjusting to the foreign binding. Pedro clasped her wrists, holding them together in front of her. Silk slid against skin as he tied her.
She stood before him, waiting, submitting but not submissive, his downfall, his benediction, his angel.
59% - 🔥 blow job (incomplete), blindfold fun, light riding crop spanking, oral for her
He stood still, even blindfolded, fully alert.
She nudged his legs apart and shifted closer. With trembling fingers, she reached for the placket of his trousers.
“Ana.”
“You shouldn’t question my desires.”
91% - 🔥 bj (incomplete), her on top
Pedro tilted her head to the side, and for a second, he breathed the same air as her. “I would battle heaven and hell to keep you by my side.”
“You won’t have to. I’m here to stay.”
He traced her upper lip with his tongue. A taste was not enough, and he swept inside, craving more
