Arghhh I wanted to love this - but it just felt like I was reading another Jacqueline Wilson novel from my childhood. Which, don’t get me wrong, isn’t a bad thing - I just expected the writing to be more… grown up? Yes there were lots of grown up themes - but then, Jaqueline’s books have always featured adult topics. I wanted to see more of Ellie and Alice, I wanted to know more Nadine and her interesting life, I wanted to punch Gary in the face. The writing was still so juvenile - lots of telling rather than showing. I hate to criticise my beloved childhood author, but this just didn’t hit the mark for me.
