Buses Are a Comin': Memoir of a Freedom Rider by Richard Rooker, Charles Person
informative
reflective
fast-paced
5.0
Charles Person shares his story of being a Morehouse College student in Atlanta in 1960. He joins the Atlanta Student Movement, meets some key players in the early civil rights non-violence movement and in the spring of 1961 he joins the Freedom Riders - a group of black and white people traveling as a group to challenge the segregationist practices in bus terminals and bus riding between Washington D.C. and New Orleans. Practices that were deemed unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1956 - but were still being carried out in much of the south.
Person tells of his experiences - occasionally weaving in connections to the civil rights issues making headlines in the United States in 2020 and 2021. A powerful book.
