Pack Up the Moon by Kristan Higgins

sad
  • Loveable characters? Yes

2.75

The sentiment of this book is beautiful. The final pages were equally sad and lovely. The entire book is quite sad but I shed a few tears toward the end.

I’m left inspired to write letters to my husband and loved ones if I were terminally ill and had the time and ability to do so.

A few of the side characters were absolutely adorable and truly added value to the story. (Radley, I’m looking at you.)

But… the actual writing was quite underwhelming.
  • There were inconsistencies (ex. addressing people differently at different times- a doctor called “Dr” sometimes and by their first name other times, Lauren addresses her father as: Dad, Daddy, Father AND Pops?)
  • There were editing misses (ex. a text that had the best friend’s name when it should have been the wife’s.)
  • And an excessive usage of “honey/hon” as a term of endearment. (And I say this as someone who lives in Georgia!) On a single page, it was used four times by four different people. In a single chapter, more than 12 times. This happened throughout the entire book. It became laughable how overused it was.
  • Incorrectly used slang and odd language choices that were just cringey to me.

Unfortunately, these choices were distracting and repeatedly pulled me out of what should have been a completely immersive story about grief and rebuilding your life after a major loss.
