Caleb's Crossing by Geraldine Brooks
5.0
Story of the first two native Americans to graduate from Harvard University in 1665. They were members of the Wampanoag tribe on Martha's Vineyard. Caleb meets Bethia Mayfield, a twelve year old girl who does not want to take up the life that her Calvinist community would have her follow. Bethia narrates the story from their early schooling through graduation.
Brooks blends the struggles of the Native American males and the headstrong girl - trying to make their way in a strict and restrictive society - in a well-crafted book.
