The Hobbit slaps harder than it has any right to.
The Hobbit is simultaneously better and worse than its reputation. Those looking for a large-scale adventure will have to find their heroes elsewhere. The hobbit is a quieter book- A book of middles. Bilbo Baggins is a middle-class middle-aged halfling who's just strong, fast, and lucky enough to make it through the hurdles of middle-earth.
