Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul by Nikita Gill
5.0
"A clever woman is more lethal than a freshly crafted magic wand, and that is why she is fear." ~ [b:Fierce Fairytales: Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul|39088508|Fierce Fairytales Poems and Stories to Stir Your Soul|Nikita Gill|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1534306045l/39088508._SY75_.jpg|60663164]
I can't begin to explain how much [a:Nikita Gill|7757886|Nikita Gill|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1432646214p2/7757886.jpg]'s poetry has changed my outlook on life. [b:The Girl and the Goddess: Stories and Poems of Divine Wisdom|49814602|The Girl and the Goddess Stories and Poems of Divine Wisdom|Nikita Gill|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1595209290l/49814602._SX50_.jpg|74930769] helped me through one of my worst depressions and now "Fierce Fairytales" has helped me heal from heartbreak. My favorite line in this collection is: "They may want you to believe I was simple being brave, but anxiety makes more heroes than history would care to repeat." The way Gill was able to reinvent the identity of anxiety in just one line...truly remarkable. This quote made me feel seen, and valued despite my anxiety.
What I loved about this collection of feminist poetry is that not all the poems are geared towards women. Some of the poems are directly addressing guys, such as the one where Hansel writes to his son about how to be a good man. I love that anyone could pick up this book and find a poem applicable to their life. There is something valuable to be learned on every page. Plus, can we talk for a second about how outrageously talented Gill is?! What an artist! I know every time I buy one of Gill's books, beautiful illustrations are sure to come with it.
Some of my favorite quotes:
"You are half fairytale, half girl."
"Trauma when left untreated has the capacity to make a villain out of you."
"These are girls made of dark lace and witchcraft and a little bit of vice."
"Our stories don't begin and end because men we once trusted have left them."
"These are women made of terrible tempests and savage storms and the untamed unwanted."
"And now for your next act,
drink the poison he gives you,
and make it look damned good."
