Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud

5.0

I remember this being one of my favourite childhood books/series of all time, and reading it again, oh boy, it did not disappoint! In fact, I'd say it's an even better read as an adult for the sake of both the jokes and ancient history references, of which there are many (another thing I love about this series). I had largely forgotten the ending as well, but it was oh so satisfying in a terribly painful bittersweet sort of way and now I'm crying.
