Character driven sad girl lit that reeks of privilege has an audience, but I’m definitely not part of it. While I appreciate the art of reading about unhinged/unlikeable characters there are multiples times throughout the book where our anonymous narrator was insufferable. The definition of insanity is reiterated throughout the book and our MC is determined to embody that definition. The loose parallels  the author makes in regards to her Palestinian culture and identify feels like a checked box rather than an integral piece intentionally woven into the story.

The pacing and direction of the plot feels haphazard and the dialogue is downright awkward at times. I’m not sure what the goal of You Exist Too Much was since the reader isn’t exactly assured that our MC is even on a path towards genuinely healing, nor is the depth of her problematic relationship with her mother in properly addressed. You Exist Too Much I believe seeks to do more than what it could handle, and it unfortunately falls flat on many levels.
