Black Heart Blue by Louisa Reid

5.0

This book is absolutely beautiful starting from the first page. Thought provoking for all.

Black heart blue is one novel that I really felt connected to. Rebecca’s character has faced many trials and tribulations due to her appearance and Louisa Reid has shown Rebecca’s strength and protectiveness for her twin- Hephzibah through her.

Hephzibah and Rebecca have fundamentalist Christian parents who abuse both, Rebecca more due to her disorder.

Both twins receive freedom when they join college but Hephzibah naivety soon leads to her death.

Black heart blue is told from two point of views, one the present- Rebecca and the other Hephzibah, the past. As each / a few chapter alternate the story develops. The language is simple yet the underlining themes are complex and deep.

Overall this novel is extraordinary and an absolute must read.

“There was no point dreaming; the leaflet was nothing more than a glass slipper handed to the ugly sister. I would never fit in there even if they’d let me go, which was a fairy tale in itself.”
