Can't We Talk about Something More Pleasant? by Roz Chast

4.0

A good book! Well-told, relatable, emotional, funny.

I was also pleased with the multimedia nature—there's a mix of comics panels, infographics, document facsimiles, pages of text, observational sketches, photos. And it very much works.

I am very much not a fan of Chast's typical work—I routinely ignore her New Yorker spot cartoons cause they are never worth the labor of reading them. And I don't exactly love her drawing style. But this book is not like that at all. It's very readable and rewarding. And her drawing style works great for it.

The biggest distraction while reading was wondering wtf is wrong with Chast's husband?!? He seems to exist, but offers no help or even sympathy. Can't help feel something is very wrong with him and/or their relationship. Even if he is an unhelpful cad, it's extra weird to omit him given how much of this book is about her parents' relationship as a couple; some paralleling seems like an obvious part of the storytelling. (Mostly him, but her kids, friends, and extended family all feel like they should be mentioned or included more. She is not alone, but acts like it.)
