This was like reading a Hero's Mercs book on steroids and with zombies, and I'm definitely passing it along to Ari because I think she'll enjoy it.
The writing style is quite cinematic, with the chapters reading like you're cutting to a new scene in an action movie. I was engaged early on, and by halfway mark, I wanted an uninterrupted period to plow through the rest of it. Good action and pacing throughout.
Joe and Grace were a bit cringe. Writing romantic subplots doesn't seem to be Maberry's forte, so maybe don't? He also has a habit of using descriptors (calling a character "the dark-haired man" instead of their name, for example) and making "what happened next was horrific" announcements, which I don't like. I feel like it undermines the tension and insults the reader's intelligence.
Still a good read, though! I'm probably going to continue with the series once I whittle down my TBR pile some.
