Did not finish book.

1.0

TL;DR, DNF

This book was one that I thought would be super interesting going into it, and at the beginning, I was intrigued, but the further into it I got, the more disappointed I was with the way the story went. At first glance, this is a book full of mystery and intrigue. Marigold, "Mari", moves into a haunted house, but the family doesn't realize it's haunted.

I only made it just about 25% of the way through, but this is something that you can tell from the beginning. There really isn't any mystery about it. What is eerie is some of what happens inside the house, but it's not eerie enough to be mentioned, nor even for a reader to get excited about.

What I disliked about this book was probably the sheer amount of mentions of weed. Mari is addicted to weed and it mentions it so much that it's distasteful. I get it, people can be addicted and I'm sure it's realistic to a point, but there's a fine line between being authentic and being near vulgar. And this book, in my opinion, crossed that line.

It's almost a whole side-plot of just weed and how Mari needs to get it in order to "get by." But the reason I say almost is because it very nearly overshadows the main plotline. There is a large chunk in what I've read where the main plot isn't being developed, only the side plot of "how to get weed" is.

Overall, the character development wasn't impressive, the plotlines were pretty depressing, and there was nothing else to keep me engaged in the book, so I didn't finish it. I don't usually write bad reviews, but I just wanted someone to be warned about this one. I'm really sad that this book didn't live up to its potential.

But there you have it, all the reasons why I disliked this book. Hope that helps you in your decision as to whether or not to read this book.
