Most of the time, I understood why this book was written by a white man. I even felt that this book had to written by a white person, as it is a part of “whiteness studies”. He explains this really well in the introduction. And with gender dynamics, it would make sense that a male would be able to research and write this.

At other points however, it felt short-sighted precisely because it was written by a white male. The fact that he interviewed 16 people 13 of whom were male enraged me to be honest. And I found his language to be unintentionally deragotory towards Kurds on multiple occasions.

A great book still. A great account of race relations in Turkey. Very well-researched and theorized for the most part. And as a “white middle-class Turk”, I think I was its intended audience.
