2023: I am still rereading through most of the SEs - and the second time around I actually liked this one a little bit more than I liked it the first time I read it. There are several short stories in this one - the clan fights rats, attacks a nasty two leg that traps and tortures cats, saves a twoleg kit and they go and fight on behalf of the cats visiting them and training with them. I liked each one of those stories because they are action packed and tense. We also have several other things happen, the trouble with cats accepting daylight warriors - that just fizzles out by the end of the book, Snookthorn deciding that he doesn't want to be a warrior right after he gets a warrior name and Sharpclaw constantly challenging and undermining Leafstar - which I still didn't really like especially because when they finally talk ... his excuse is that he wanted her to be a confident leader she could be - there were many other ways he could've done that instead of constantly speaking over her and doing things behind her back. I didn't like that part and this book made me hate Sharpclaw and I am so glad that he is no longer around.
2020: I wanted to read another Skyclan book for so long now - and it was okay. I liked Firestar's quest so much more though. This book felt bland and the ending was just way too fast paced.
Here's what I liked: Echosong/Frecklepaw situation- though I felt that that was resolved a little bit too fast. Through the entire book Echosong and Leafstar quarrel because Frecklepaw wishes to become a medicine cat and she is a daylight-warrior, but at the end of the book Leafstar is like: "ok, she will be a medicine cat." - and that's that.
Sharpclaw - he had so much potential to be interesting and so did Echosong- but Echosong is literally just there in the background and he just comes off as maybe a traitor and evil but then in the end he is like: "oh that was only to make my leader stronger"- and Leafstar forgives him way too easily.
Snookthorn leaving -that had the potential to be an interesting conflict but it got shoved aside way too fast.
Daylight warriors- I really wanted to see more of this concept - I liked it, it was unique and never really seen with other clans and that too got resolved way too easily and fast.
Rat attack - I really liked this part- it was different, it was unique and I felt tension all the way through hoping that nobody dies.
Twoleg attack/scare- that too was different and unique and I enjoyed it.
Saving the kid- that was nice too read too, I loved that they attacked the bad humans but they also recognized that humans can be good and that they can sometimes help them too - that entire trail idea was wonderful and I loved every second of it.
When they finally decide to help Stick and the others fight Dodge I was surprised how late it came around though, it starts at page 439 and the book has 462 pages. A lot of it is just preparation and when they finally fight it's way too short, Red's death would've been great if we got to know her, like if she came with Stick and others (I know that she wouldn't have met Harvey, but maybe they could follow them or something, Stick would recognize that Harvey lives with Dodge, they would still fight but Skyclan would accept them anyways and Stick couldn't do anything to prevent them from staying), but since we only saw glimpses of Red from Stick's chapters I didn't really get attached and whilst her death was still sad it didn't really hold any weight for me. And the ending part where every single plot resolves in the last few pages was just annoying too. It happened way too fast whilst some parts of the book just dragged on because nothing seemed to be happening. The pacing was so annoyingly bad in this book.
