I enjoyed A Sin and a Half significantly more than I thought I would. Don't let the cover fool you. This book is a true fantasy not a romantasy. The world building was strong though I did find the physical descriptions of the characters to be a bit lacking. On the back of the physical book it says A Sin and a Half feature feminine rage, which it does, but that could have come across stronger had we followed Enid's character more. The female characters are overall strong and complex which I enjoy. The writing was overall tight and the plotting good. In the acknowledgements the author thanks their critique group and you can tell people were actively constructively critiquing the book and the author following through on their suggestions. This is something I wish more authors in general did.

I did find some of the politics expressed in the book to be a bit more on the conservative side than I prefer. In the last half of the book, the characters talk about paying tax to the empire and all its laws and rules and how they don't want to pay taxes, follow their laws, or be registered. Had these sentiments been expressed in a stronger context of the empire doing nothing to support Half-Brill or how human society is vastly different from the empire than I would have less of an issue with it but it did have a libertarian feel to it.

A Sin and a Half features reincarnation, which I think was really interesting, and the book wrapped up really nicely so I am struggling to see how it will be a series. We also are introduced to the concept of multiple dimensions being overlaid on top of each other so may be that and the past lives will come into play later.
