Let Us Descend by Jesmyn Ward

5.0

It's hard not to love anything that author Jesmyn Ward writes. This is the story of Annis, an enslaved girl and readers follow along as she is forced to travel from the Carolinas to the slave markets of New Orleans and eventually onto a Louisiana sugar plantation. Heartbreaking to see life through a young woman who has no say over her body and what others can or can not do to it. An important read as slavery was a type of hell.

'Let us descend, ' the poet now began, 'and enter this blind world.'" -Inferno, Dante Alighieri
