Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy

Audiobook

The narrator for the audiobook is awesome, he does great voices for the characters and his Irish accent is great. I really enjoyed listening to this book. There was a little tune between chapters that was very atmospheric.

The plot was fun, 12 year old Stephanie's uncle dies and she gets sucked in to the world of magic by detective Skulduggery Pleasant, who thinks that a bad guy is trying to find the legendary scepter of the ancients. Stephanie is the only one who believes that the scepter exists, and she joins with Skulduggery to avenge her uncle. I liked their relationship, they bicker occasionally. Stephanie can be a little bit of a snarky jerk but hey she's 12, that's really the only evidence of her age actually. I got a bit lost toward the end with the action going on but it was fine. I'd definitely read more by this author. It was also kind of nice to read a book with no romance at all.

Oh there was one thing that annoyed me, another female character (Tannith) at one point turns to Skulduggery and says, "What do we do now?" Ugh. She's a smart character, give her more credit than that.
