Dear Justyce by Nic Stone
5.0
I liked Dear Martin, but in a way it was maybe a little too YA for me? It was very spelled out, this is the anti-racist response to doofus rich white people who are idiots about the Black experience in America. I think it is probably a GREAT book for teens, but it wasn't as much for me.
However, I adored Dear Justyce, where we get to hear the experience of Quan, Manny's cousin who is arrested in [b:Dear Martin|24974996|Dear Martin (Dear Martin, #1)|Nic Stone|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1495747080l/24974996._SY75_.jpg|44640226]. We find that Justyce and Quan have a bit of a back story, a sort-of friendship made in childhood in a playground rocket ship. Through letters from Quan to Justyce and portraits of Quan's life, we get to see the painful years of Quan's childhood and adolescence, leading him to where he is, incarcerated.
It's heartbreaking to see Quan's life, and you might want to give the book and Quan a hug at the end. Highly recommend the audiobook done by Dion Graham, who is phenomenal.
