A Million Aunties by Alecia McKenzie

4.0

This is a delightful book huge with the lives of a collection of people loosely forming a family .The book is set in Jamaica for the most part with a section at the end following the group as they take a trip to France
The author has a lovely friendly easy to read prose style .i found I was instantly invested in the characters from the very start
I loved the way the characters interacted and became friends and even family .I was particularly touched by the young man who befriending an older woman with mental health struggles accepted her so quickly and started to call her mother after she confused him with a lost son.
The sense of place and nationality is strong and the hot sunshine of Jamaica is in every page
I do struggle sometimes to follow novels told from multiple points of view and this story switches between people every chapter ,I did get a bit lost to begin with because of this
I felt the book did need a better ending ,it seems to stop mid chapter and I wasn’t ready for it to end
I’d recommend to those who enjoy novels about relationships and who would enjoy the tropical setting
I need to apologise for my delay in reading this novel that I downloaded on NetGalley Uk earlier in the year .Glad I finally got to it though
