This is the second historical fiction book set in the period of World War II that I’ve read. The first being The Book Thief.
As a history student, I hated the World War II time period as I studied it for 4 years in secondary school and I told myself that I have had enough of it. I didn’t want to read historical fiction books set in that time period because I felt strongly that I would hate it. But I don’t.
I actually find myself appreciating this book. It focused on the lives of the people who were trying their best to escape the terrors and dangers of war and start a new life elsewhere where they can feel and be safe.
It was heartbreaking to read but also inspiring and humbling. It made me appreciate where I am in life right now. It also showed us the strength of the human spirit and compassion of the human heart as well as the madness and selfishness of the human mind and ego.
Ruta Sepetys is my new favourite author. I look forward to reading more of her books and I intend to collect them.
