You’ve Got This! started off as a little cliche and a little childish, but still very sweet and promising. Until suddenly and very rapidly, it turned into a whole load of “What the hell am I reading?”.
The premise of the book sounds great, though the same can’t be said about its execution. The first part of the novel feels lively and hopeful and it’s enjoyable reading about the the developing friendship between Fleur and Matt and watching Fleur grow out of her shell and learn about herself after spending so many years suppressing her real self. Matt and Fleur have appear to have a great dynamic together and the pacing and ease you feel reading is initially great!
However, the novel reaches a certain point where you can’t quite figure out why things are happening. There feels like an excessive number of plot points, namely the sudden introduction of Fleur’s biological parents, the sudden reality TV show Matt is on, as well as Matt going “missing” and then being found not two pages later. All in all, it felt as though Morrey had a multitude of book ideas and couldn’t help but squeeze them all in the last 50 pages of the novel. Nothing really happens at all until the last few pages where they’re all of a sudden kissing, dating, breaking up, “missing”, and engaged. Perhaps what’s most frustrating is spending hours reading hundreds of pages when the entire story actually happens within five poorly written chapters.
You’ve got this! markets itself as a feel-good romantic comedy but there’s a criminal lack of romance or comedy throughout and I truly only felt good in first part of the novel briefly and then once again when it was over.
It has the potential to be so much better. It’s a shame it’s not ): Still a generally light-hearted read for anyone looking for something easy that doesn’t require any thinking.
The positives! (I truly really liked some parts)
The positives! (I truly really liked some parts)
- Anna and Andy have a very sweet relationship. It was also so lovely seeing Fleur making friends with other women when she’s struggled previously. Anna is an icon, I imagine her outfits are so good
- That entire scene in the beginning where Matt drives her all the way down to Jasper’s house and then the two of them sleep in kid’s bunk beds? Incredible, I loved it so much and wish the rest of the novel was similar. Matt is a darling here, genuinely
- Matt’s family! Angels
2.5 stars just because I love the Matt driving to London scene that bad and also Anna is my beloved
