You Are What You Love: The Spiritual Power of Habit by James K.A. Smith

informative reflective fast-paced

5.0

This book is a simplified version of Smith's book "Desiring the Kingdom" (it's magnificent btw). His idea of discipleship is based on a particular idea of what it means to be human. Contrary to the now popular Cartesian thought (from René Descartes), Smith believes we are not Thinking-Things but Desiring-Things, i.e. we are not what we think/believe but we are what we love. He takes his cue from St. Augustine's insights in his Confessions: "Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee ... My love is my weight/gravity." It's a different way of seeing the world and a much needed tonic to the rational reductionism which plagues much of today's thought, not least inside the church. This book is well worth its price and then some.
