The Street by Ann Petry

emotional reflective tense medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? A mix
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes

5.0

This is fiction but Petry's illustration of Lutie Johnson's constant struggle and frustrations as she confronts poverty, racism and sexism while raising her young son and her resolve to get him away from 𝗧𝗡𝗲 π—¦π˜π—Ώπ—²π—²π˜ is as real as it gets.

This is brilliant (and brutal) storytelling. Period. The End.
