The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

5.0

It feels like it's been a long time since I've read a book and at its conclusion gone "wow...".

I initially thought it was a YA book (for whatever reason), but the first few pages quickly dispelled that notion (while completely hilarious, it is utterly and awesomely profane - I had to hold back sniggers as I was reading on the train, ended up massively grinning instead).

I adore Lynch's effortless casual writing style, though never falling too far towards conversational, and the dialogues were so sharp and witty; each character had their own voice and style of speaking, even the minor ones, which just brought them to life and made them that much more vivid.

Lynch balances and meshes world building with the story and character development so god damn well; I didn't once get bored
Spoilerand figured out quickly that the Interlude chapters were basically a set up for what was coming up
.

This book was an emotional roller coaster... It is also unapologetically gory (I literally gasped, hand to mouth - on the train, again - during a particularly gruesome scene) and just all round fantastic.

My only regret is that I didn't read this book sooner.
