I can see why this won an award for best first novel. Ms. Kim does a great job recounting the relationships of the families involved with the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy business run by Pak and Young Yoo in Miracle Creek, Virginia. The Yoos, the children who are taking the oxygen therapy, their mothers, Matt and Janine - Matt who is participating for infertility.
The story starts with day one of the trial for the mother of one of the children who died in an explosion at the clinic. During the course of the trial we learn the stories of all the parties - the nuances of the relationships - the lies that spouses, children and parents tell each other - their friends and their children. Some of her descriptors were so powerful that I was sorry I was listening and couldn’t stop to savor the words.
As I listened and learned more about the lives of the characters - my opinion shifted as to who were the “good guys” vs the “bad guys”. I understood Elizabeth’s actions, grew angry on her behalf at the protestors, started out liking and subsequently loathing Matt. Through it all, Young Yoo remains steadfast - the guiding light. Really enjoyable “read”.
