Zeitoun by Dave Eggers

5.0

This is yet another amazing non-fiction book from Eggers, who reins himself in as a fiction writer to tell the story of a Muslim family caught in Hurricane Katrina. The story evolves not just as a survival story for the main character, but also a story about America in the Post-9/11 world where a person's religion brands them a terrorist and the aftermath of the impromptu Kangaroo Courts set after the storm surged through continues to linger with something close to evil. I had to keep reminding myself: this is not a work of fiction. And yet, the family at the center here -- the Zeitouns -- are a symbol of strength and courage and we have a lot to learn from them.
