The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer
4.5
This book is sooooooooooo good!!! Reading it for the 2nd time was really cool, because I managed to pick up on every little clue and piece of foreshadowing the book was setting up! This book is just so underrated omg please READ ITTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!! (tho be prepared for a potential existential crisis)

4,5 *
The fact that no one is talking about this book is truly a crime!
Even though it was somewhat slow-paced, I was surprisingly never bored while reading “The Darkness Outside Us” (I say surprisingly bc I usually don’t like slow-paced books).
The mystery was really enthralling! The buildup to the end of part 1 + the beginning of part 2 had me legitimately shocked!!!!! Truly gagged!! Shaking, trembling and paranoid! Also, a little frightened, ngl. 😰😨 Admittedly, I am a little bitch, but still – I wasn’t expecting to be scared reading this at night asdhjdfk.
After that 1st reveal the book was filled with tension!!! I was soooo scared for these characters while reading this! 😰 And I really loved seeing Ambrose and Kodiak figuring things out, trying to help their future selves and, obviously, getting closer. ☺️💕
And later it’s revealed that (view spoiler) and I just felt… so empty. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this after reading a book. (view spoiler)
I truly was not expecting the philosophical (?) side of this book. I wasn’t ready to question the meaning of life and to feel so empty about humanity’s existence, but here we are, having a bit of an existential crisis. 🫠
The ending was actually quite hopeful, but honestly I just felt too hollow to be happy.
Anyways read this book if you’re ready to feel intrigue > suspicion > paranoia > uneasiness > sadness > existential dread in that exact order.
