The Slow Regard of Silent Things...is. As Patrick Rothfuss points out in his afterword, it's not quite a story in the conventional sense, but I still think it is quite lovely. In this novella, Rothfuss strengthens the world underneath the university and its inhabitant, Auri, by taking a third person view of her life for one week.

With a large focus on artifacts and rooms, this book is a beautiful view at a tortured yet thriving character in the Kingkiller world. From the creative naming of each place and object to the things she finds scary and exciting, Auri is a brilliantly and uniquely written character in The Kingkiller Chronicle. This story is also Rothfuss's only to not feature Kvothe at all, which is an interesting difference.

While slow paced and confusing in places, this story shows how skilled Rothfuss is with setting up stories. While I enjoyed the author-read audiobook, I loved checking out the physical edition from the library to see the beautiful art.
