The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery
informative
reflective
medium-paced
3.0
I was a bit misled by the book's description. I was hoping it was going to really dive into the more philosophical elements of consciousness through the lens of an octopus because they are indeed fascinating creatures and the most alien we'll encounter that appears to be conscious.
But the book was more of a memoir of Montgomery's experience with a variety of octopuses as she visited the New England Aquarium, with a lot of fluff in there. The book splits off into her struggle to get her dive certification, and dive trips to go see octopuses. And sometimes in her descriptions of things it goes on just a little bit much or throws unnecessary details in there.
With that said, it's still a decently enjoyable, easy read. If you've seen the Netflix doc My Octopus Teacher, it won't be anything new to you, save some mentions of experiments performed in the past with amusing results.
