Not for fans of plot-focused books. I was expecting to learn a bit about the construction of the canal as this is supposedly historical fiction. The concept here is great—you can tell the author intended to write an epic, multi-generational story—but it’s all backstory, random side anecdotes, and very little to do with the canal itself. Following so many characters (10+) ultimately leaves the reader unable to deeply connect with any of them.
