The Seventh Bride by T. Kingfisher

4.0

A really compelling and original retelling of Bluebeard. I really liked the whole idea of it--the house, and the magic, and the wives. Had to stay up until 4AM to finish it.
I got impatient with the heroine at times. I feel that her fears and confusion were understandable, and she wasn't built as a clever character that solves mysteries easily, so it's not like it was unrealistic or anything, but I grew frustrated with her for struggling with some questions when it seemed so obvious to me (and I'm still not fond of the stylistic choice of writing the thoughts out in italics sometimes, but I realise that that's just me). But otherwise this was a great mix of compelling and endearing and dark and magical.
