The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
1.0
Something about this rubbed me the wrong way. I think it was just the cliche of it all: as if WWII wasn’t bursting at the seams with better, more poignant literature, as if this gimmick of Death as narrator was insightful or innovative.
To me, all the stylistic choices felt like stylistic blunders; Death interrupted the story more than added to it, and while i could see what they were going for with the little asides to definitions and foreshadowing, it just read as pretentious.
I didnt even end up finishing it because i was 400+ pages in and the story had been clunking around in circles that whole time. Not my cup of tea.
