The Works: Anatomy of a City by Kate Ascher
informative
fast-paced
3.5
A quick (well not to me, I spend like 10 months with it ups!, but really, it's not very long and it is illustrated) and light book about the internal functioning of a city, taking NY as a primary example.
As someone interested in urbanism, this was a very interesting read but I think anyone that is curious enough about how things work could find something of value in here. The chapters are short and varied in topics according to interest.
It doesn't go very deep into anything in particular so if you want to deep dive into any of the themes explored, this is not the book for that, but you can use it as a jumping start.
Some of the chapters include: How the subway works, how the food chain delivery functions, how air traffic works, different types of urban furniture in the city etc etc.
