The Spite House by Johnny Compton

dark emotional mysterious sad medium-paced
  • Plot- or character-driven? Character
  • Strong character development? No
  • Loveable characters? It's complicated
  • Diverse cast of characters? Yes
  • Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

3.5

Plot = .75 (good not amazing. Just felt like some avenues weren't fully explored)

Characters = .50 (most of the characters are written to be not great people. I kind of felt the main trio needed more time to develop into characters I cared about.

Promise = 1 (I thought the Gothic approach to the house and the story behind it was excellent. You get a solid haunted house here.)

Engagement .75 (good, but there were times when we saw character povs that I don't care about.)

Efficiency .50 (rarely do I say a book needs to be longer....this one does. I just felt the end was rushed and I didn't feel satisfied with the climax.)
