Burn for Burn by Siobhan Vivian, Jenny Han
5.0
This is a long review so sit down and get some refreshments.
Wow where to start this book is good. No it’s really really good. I might go as far to say I loved it. The start of 2016 was not my reading year as I think I was in a massive slump; so this was my fourth none school book I’ve read this year (also my first review in ages) and it may be my favourite. I expected no less from Jenny Han as I’ve read ‘To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before’ by her and I adored it. However I haven’t read anything by Siobhan Vivan but this gave me a good impression of her and her writing.
Obviously by the premise of the book there would be some serious topics but I didn’t think they’d be as dark as they were or explored as much. In comparison to the cover that alludes it will be a fluffy contemporary, which it isn’t really, it is much darker. Some authors would shy away from these topics but the way they were handled in this book were impacting and done well. It caused me to think about the topics and just all around were executed well, showing the issues and consequences.
The plot was unique to me as I hadn’t really read anything like it before. It was intriguing and as it did give some details on the blurb about what happened in the first few chapters it was only the basis to the actual story and other events. I never really found myself bored in the story and it was extremely interesting, I loved every page. I love all of it to be honest. The revenges were interesting and well done. I feel like I should talk more about it but really I can only say that I really enjoyed the book.
Oh boy the characters. All the boys were dicks. Actually most people were dicks. But they were supposed to be like that. And yes they were done very well as, literally put me in a room with some of them and they’d get an earful. Maybe even a chair to the face. However my favourite character was by far Kat and in the first forty pages I already knew that. But in the last few chapters I grew to like Mary a lot more than I had. The three main characters were made well in my opinion and I liked them all, some over the others as we already know.
I already knew I’d love the writing because hello Jenny Han, I love her writing. The writing style was enjoyable and not confusing. It had enough detail and explained it fully. I just really enjoyed it, I don’t know how else to explain it. It didn’t really need anything else, it wasn’t slacking. Usually I have to re-read parts to fully understand it but I don’t remember needing to. I haven’t read a book in ages which had different point of views, but this book executed it well (I say done it well alot in this review xD) and was enjoyable. It was separated mostly equally and explored each character. You could tell by how each chapter was written how it reflected the character talking and their personality, like you were in their head. I enjoyed every character’s view and every forty five chapter.
I loved the last paragraph so much. I’ve re reading it many times now (mostly to my family members xD) as it ended on such a cliff hanger and ENDED SO WELL, BEAUTIFUL. NEXT BOOK PLEASE.
Damn the twists. There was a lot and they were gooood. The ending left on the cliff hanger and I NEED the next book but I just ordered some books so it’ll have to wait ))):. I accidentally spoiled myself BUT on the spoiler I read I may have read it wrong and thought it happened to a character but it ended up it was a different character so that’s good xD. Some twists were kind of expected by that I mean I put stuff together and others not at all.
I can’t wait to continue with the trilogy as I want to see what happens next with the plot and characters. I already love it and kind of don’t want to leave the world. Whoops. Hopefully I can get to them very soon. I’m going to order the next one as we speak xD.

Oh boy the characters.
Spoiler
Love triangles don’t exist in this book; it’s like a love line. Everyone likes everyone. Who to ship? Let’s just get this out there I ship Kat and Alex over Lillia and Alex. Fight me. That may change but at the moment that’s how it is. Page forty onwards. Well the love line goes like this: Rennie likes Reeve and I think at one point Reeve liked Mary and Mary likes Reeve. But Reeve likes Lillia. Lillia likes Alex. Alex likes Lillia. But he also likes Kat and Kat likes him. Phew, done, did I miss any out? Oh yeah Ashlin and Derek are just chilling in the back. They’ve got their relationship sorted. Even though this is confusing and you’re like ‘DAMN FFS SORT IT OUT. LIKE ONE PERSON. JEEZ NO GET AWAY THEY NEED TO BE SHIPPED WITH SOMEONE ELSE’, it was fun and I enjoyed it. But I know who I want to be together and I’m at the Jar Island dock getting the ships ready for the couples. In the book there is the characters we are just supposed to not like and for the most part I didn’t (Alex,Rennie,Reeve) but there were parts in the book where you liked them and you saw cute parts of them. Like Reeve giving the necklace to Mary. Or Rennie telling Lillia how much she meant to her. Then you were like you have redeemable bits maybe it may work out, but then you remembered everything they’d done. And then they made it worse. I really wanted Reeve and Mary to work out but I don’t think it will. It’s a tad unhealthy. And he’s a dick. And she’s so sweet. She needs a nice to guy to rock up. Hey PJ, could that work? One part that stood out to me was Lillia and Kat remembering little things about their friendship. But the part that stood out the most was when she was talking about the pool at Lillia’s and Nadia going in the deep end. This section was about how much Kat enjoyed being with Lillia and how much she actually like her but Rennie didn’t. How Kat was the true friend. Also the part where Kat remembered all the little things about Lillia that Rennie didn’t. That was a favourite part of mine. Please can Lillia, Mary and Kat just make a squad? That would be great. All be best friends. Please?I already knew I’d love the writing because hello Jenny Han, I love her writing. The writing style was enjoyable and not confusing. Like I didn’t expect Mary to try to commit suicide or that Alex wasn’t actually hooking up with Nadia. But I sense that there is something there, that Alex wasn’t telling the truth. I’m watching you Alex.I can’t wait to continue with the trilogy as I want to see what happens next with the plot and characters. I already love it and kind of don’t want to leave the world. Whoops.
