Mighty Jack by Ben Hatke

5.0

In this ingenious fairy tale retelling Jack brings home some magic seeds from a flea market, at the urging of his usually silent little sister. The beans grow a garden overnight and some of the things grown are really cool but others are dangerous. Jack, his sister and a new friend Lilly end up fighting monsters from the garden with swords (from home-schooled Lilly's trips to Renaissance faires.) I love the way this fantasy is super rooted in reality. Jack has a single mom and his family is poor. Lilly is being homeschooled which is sometimes really cool and sometimes lonely. And fragile silent sister Maddy starts to come alive with her interest in the garden. I look forward to reading the sequels.
