My reading of Doctor Faustus was subconsciously a full comparison to Goethe’s Faust, and I found Marlowe’s version to be far more comedic - the scenes of Faustus and Mephistopheles pranking the Pope, as well as some of the dialogue between the two of them, genuinely made me laugh, which I appreciated. I think I prefer the execution of Goethe’s version of this story, but this was a fairly digestible and enjoyable read. Also would have loved to have seen contemporary audiences’ reactions to this.
