Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson
5.0
If I hadn't been driving I would have literally tried to hold onto my heart at the end of this one. Beautiful depiction in verse of 12-year-old ZJ navigating his life after his football pro dad starts having major problems from the concussions. (But set in 99-00, so they don't know what is going on.) ZJ's friendships and his relationship with his parents felt so real and sweet and hopeful. Twelve is both big and little, and I think Woodson did a gorgeous job with that.
