When Strivings Cease: Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace by Ruth Chou Simons
4.0
This book was one that seemed easy to get through, but actually wasn't. While she was never outright condemning, she brought up a lot of points that hit-home for me and really convicted me in more ways than I was expecting. One of Simons' main points was grace and how we strive for it but we are never going to reach it unless we quit reaching for it and let God "bring it to us," essentially. I thought that was a really good way of putting it and she brought a lot of different parallels into the book along those lines, which was cool to read.
That said, the conviction that happened to me as I read this book made it hard to get through despite the open and welcoming writing style, but a lot of that, I think, was because I'd opened it expecting something so much easier than what it really was.
Simons invites you in with personal stories of her life and revelations from her studies in the Bible, giving references and prayers, quotes from other people she's learned from, and more. It was a really enlightening compilation of items that had a compelling overarching lesson to learn from.
Altogether, I would certainly recommend this book. Just because it's not quite a 5-star read in my opinion definitely doesn't take away from that. I'd also read this one again! It was a challenge to get through and I certainly skimmed over some of the harder parts of it, so I'm honestly hoping I missed some good points. I'd love to buy this book just to go through and annotate it and see what else I can glean from it on future read-throughs.
Overall, this was a pretty good book and it definitely had a lot of compelling things to say. I'm definitely glad I read this one!
