All Heads Turn when the Hunt Goes by by John Farris
3.0

This is one of those out of print books that are spoken of in reverential terms by knowledgeable horror fans and command high prices for moldy old copies. I've no regrets for buying mine—this 1977 Pocket Books edition is beautiful—but it was just a bit disappointing. I do suspect it will grow on me.
There are many beautiful and shocking passages here, and that wonderfully baroque and evocative title. My difficulty with All Heads Turn When the Hunt Goes By is in how Farris attempts to condense the grand scope of his tale, which spans generations and continents, into such a short novel. There is so much story here, with so many characters, and very little room for the thing to breathe.
