The Dice Man by Luke Rhinehart
4.0
Having been proclaimed as a funny, shocking and subversive cult bestseller, The Dice Man was always destined to be my introduction to Rhinehart's literary world! There is no doubt that our lives are underpinned at every turn by rules - you cannot live in any society without them, as they permeate all things. And so the notion that one could live a life determined by the throw of the dice - regardless of the consequences - was a fascinating concept that I felt compelled to read about.
Enter Luke Rhinehart, psychiatrist, husband and father, with a life locked down by routine and order - until he rolls with the dice; let battle and the oddities and vagaries of life unfold, as Rhinehart pays increasing homage to the religion of the dice! Well written, thought-provoking and challenging in parts as one considers the moral dilemmas and ambiguities presented. I could not but wonder - how would I behave in such circumstances?
