I thoroughly enjoyed Filterworld even though it made me question the very foundation of what I enjoy and if I even do enjoy it. Chayka's filterworld is a great lens to look at our current internet culture and how it impacts our culture.
I did find his discussion of the online book community to be lacking as he doesn't take into account that it mainly consists of young women and girls whos interests have been historically derided as frivolous and unworthy. It also does not take into account all the extra emotional and mental labour women and queer people need to do and how escapist books can be of value to these people.
Chayka's overall lack of notes, citations, and bibliography were frustrating as his insights were fantastic but I would have liked him to cite his sources. The ending of the book also moved into art criticism which felt out of place within the wider discussion taking place in the book.
