“I stare at the lake, and a strange thought comes to me. That I had been one with that expanse of water. That it took me into its depths and welcomed me.”
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice: 🌶️/5
What To Expect:
✔️ Amnesia
✔️ Psychological thriller
✔️ Isolated winter cabin vibes
✔️ Dual Timeline
What It's About: Anna wakes beside a lake in upstate Vermont with no idea who she is or how she got there. Desperate for help she stumbles upon Gregg, an enigmatic widower who’s almost certainly keeping secrets. Anna’s convinced they’re not alone, but Gregg is determined to prove otherwise. Cut off from civilisation, Anna has little choice but to believe him. Through flashbacks, we meet Adria, and it becomes clear that Gregg might not be the man he claims to be.
General Thoughts: The dual timeline account had me thinking that I knew exactly where this book was going, but I was absolutely wrong.
What I Enjoyed: I loved the use of the amnesia trope here and how it was used to up the suspense at every turn. The sense of isolation in both the environment and for Anna’s character was so creepy and I had full body chills more than once. Also, I did NOT see that twist coming!
What I Struggled With: the ending was a little unsatisfying when compared to the book as a whole, requiring a little more suspension of disbelief than I like in a thriller.
All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable psychological thriller that will keep you guessing and, if you’re anything like me, will devour in a day!
