“I just think, you like people almost as much as they like you. And it make =s being around you feel like—standing in sunlight.”
“You feel like sunlight too.”

Okay, does EmHen ever miss? Nope. So as expected, I loved this one!

This is Emily’s funniest and horniest book yet imo. And in true EmHen fashion, there was no shortage of emotional depth or character growth either.

I loved both Daphne and Miles. They were wonderfully written characters, and I related to them both in different ways. I appreciated how vulnerable and intimate they were with each other. Their friendship and romance flowed so naturally, and their chemistry and banter were top-tier. May I say, it was some of the best banter that EmHen has written. They were made for each other—such a perfect opposites-attract romance.

And I’m obsessed with Miles. Miles is hands down Henry’s hottest MMC to date. Beard? Tattoos? Knows wine? And he’s a kind, compassionate, ray-of-sunshine/golden retriever??? Gimme. I’m drooling. He is a close second to Gus for top EH MMC. I also get very strong Nick Miller vibes from Miles.. like is this New Girl fanfic? Because if so, I’m here for it.

I really enjoyed the realistic exploration of the challenge and importance of making friends as an adult, and I really loved how the friendship developed between Daphne and Ashleigh.

I absolutely adored the vibes of this story. I mean, this was set in Michigan again, so as a Michigander, the setting was obviously superior in my eyes (ha, I'm not sorry). I could easily picture Waning Bay! But while I loved the setting, the banter, the chemistry, and all the characters and development, I still felt like there was something missing. I think this would have been an EmHen book where we could have benefited from the MMCs POV.

Regardless of that, this is still a win for me. Emily Henry seriously can do no wrong, and she will always be a comfort author for me. Does that make my reviews a little biased? Maybe, but hey, at least I’m honest.

Quotes

“I'd tempered my expectations, packed them tight into bricks, built a fortress to protect me. But keeping every glimmer of hope out has isolated me too, and I want to be seen. I want to be loved. I want to live with the hope that things can get better, even if, in the end, they don’t.”
___

“I've always cleaved to the people I love, tried to orient my orbit around them. Maybe, I realize, I've been trying to make myself un-leave-able. But it hasn't worked.”
___

“You can’t untell someone your secrets. You can’t I say those delicate truths once you learn you can’t trust the person you handed them to.”
__

“Every time he looks over, it’s like the sun peeking out from behind a cloud, and I do my best to feel content, to be just another person at the edge of his glow.”
__

“Only for me, it’s never been about controlling the feelings themselves. I wouldn’t know where to begin with that. It’s more, controlling the expectations you have for certain people.”
__

“I just think, you like people almost as much as they like you. And it make =s being around you feel like—standing in sunlight.”
“You feel like sunlight too.”

__

“What about audiobooks?”
“Does that count?”
“Of course it counts”

__

"You can't force a person to show up, but you can learn a lesson when they don't"
__

“Trust people’s actions, not their words.
Don’t love anyone who isn’t ready to love you back.
Let go of the people who don’t hold onto you.
Don’t wait on anyone who’s in no rush to get to you.”

__

“I know it’s cliche, but being on the water always does feel like what I imagine church feels like for some people.”
“I get that. Out here, you’re small and there’s no one else around, but you’re not lonely. It’s like you’re connected to everyone and everything.”

__

“It also takes a kind of fearlessness, to invite someone into your space and ask to be invited into theirs.”
__

“All those moments throughout the days, weeks, months that don’t get marked on calendars with hand-drawn stars or little stickers. Those are the moments that make a life. Not grand gestures, but mundane details that, over time, accumulate until you have a home, instead of a house.”
__

“I’m a cynic. And a cynic is a romantic who’s too scared to hope.”
__

“Life’s short enough without us talking ourselves out of hope and trying to dodge every bad feeling. Sometimes you have to push through the discomfort, instead of running.”
__

“You’re wonderful. You’re the reason for the word wonderful. It really shouldn’t be used for anything else. You make me want to see the best in everyone. You’re the person I want to be with when everything’s going wrong, instead of just wanting to skip over those times entirely.”
__

“I didn't learn what love was supposed to feel like. It doesn't feel natural, or come easily to me, to let anyone close. But you—you make love so easy, Daphne. You make me think I already deserve it, exactly how I am.”
__

"And I feel lucky every time you look at me. Not because I think I've managed to earn you, but because it feels like you don't need me to. Like you just ... like me." He shakes his head, voice fraying as he corrects himself: "Like you love me. That's how I feel with you."
__

“And I know I’m not who you pictured yourself with, but I think I could be, eventually. If you’ll let me. So don’t go. Because I don’t want you to. Because you’re my best friend, and I’m in love with you.”
__

“I love you in a way that feels brand-new. You make every single thing that went wrong feel like it was just a step in the right direction, and it—it makes me excited. For life to keep surprising me.”
