Piranesi by Susanna Clarke
4.0
Somewhere, said Arne-Sayles, there must be a passage, a door between us and wherever magic had gone.
By reading this book, you’re also reading Piranesi’s personal journals!
The story begins with the main character, Piranesi, observing the tides, the joining of three tides, and how he talk about the beauty of the House.
The Beauty of the House is immeasurable; its kindness infinite.
From that line alone, somehow I managed to judge the way Piranesi perceived the House... And it was something strange yet fascinating that you’ll also find through out the entire book.
When he wrote A description of The World in his journal... I finally understand that the definition of ‘the World’ from his point of view was totally different from mine. His understanding of the World was limited to the House / the Castle where he lived. The vast space and the changing course of the nature around him is the World he want to explore. It made me realize that the World have relatively vast meanings which depend upon the point of views of different people.
Other than Piranesi, there are other characters in Piranesi’s World. The 13 sets of bones from the deaths and the Other. The Other was the only living human being he met in the World and he’s also an academic just like Piranesi. Every Tuesday and Friday, Piranesi would meet with the Other for an hour (never more than one hour) to talk about his observation on the House and talk about their research project on finding the Great and Secret Knowledge.
One day, Piranesi found a letter in a handwriting he didn’t recognize and catch the scent of a perfume he never know. From there after, the story became more interesting!
Strange and magical would be the words I used to describe this book! I love the fact that we could interpret the whole story in this book differently! In my opinion, the magic inside this book not only reside in its magical realism world, but it also reside in each individual characters and the way each of them see everything, including the House and the World.
